Sprawled across the couch with a book in my hand, I sink into the soft leather. With Astra tending to her sisters, I’m left with nothing to do for the moment. The lack of activity has me twitchy and restless.

Luna appears through the hallway, that same look of restlessness knitting her light brows.

“Has something happened?” Gods, I hope so. I need to do something.

“I spent the morning checking in on a few of my rogue wolf packs in the human world,” the goddess replies.

“And?”

“There are rumors that the gods are walking amongst the humans.”

“Doing what?”

Her brows arch, and a smirk tugs up the corner of her lip. “You don’t want to know.”

I slide to the edge of the couch already extremely intrigued. “Tell me.”

“There was an orgy in the middle of Times Square for one.”

An unexpected laugh erupts from my lips. “Come again?”

“You heard me, Thanatos. And it isn’t only in New York City. There have been orgies, drunken revelry, insane declarations of love at first sight sprouting out all across the human realm from Rome to Paris to Istanbul.” She releases a pent-up breath. “Does that remind you of any gods you know?”

“Mmm.” I nod slowly. “No one likes a good party like Dionysus or Eros.”

“Exactly what I was thinking.” She perches on the edge of the sofa, expression pinched. “Perhaps, we should go see if we can talk some sense into our brethren.”

I nearly leap off the couch at the idea of escaping the never-ending boredom of these four white walls. Until I remember Astra… “You go, I’ll wait here,” I mutter.

“Oh, come on, Thanatos. I see that look in your eye. You’re bored out of your mind here, and who wouldn’t be? It will take days for Lachesis to recover, and you know that. A few hours away from your precious mate will not change a thing.”

“But Astra and the baby—”

“Will be perfectly safe. She has her sisters, the triplets, and not to mention the vast array of sicari that patrol the king’s compound. Why do you think I brought us here? She is safe.”

I release a grunt, uncertainty waging a war in my gut. “Fine,” I grit out. “But only a short visit.”

After a hasty goodbye, in which Astra practically shoved me out the door, I traipse after Luna toward the glowing lights of the king’s private portal. I know he and his queen helped Attie once, but they also tried to kill me. Did I deserve it? Yes. Did it make me distrust them any less? No.

“I still don’t like leaving Astra—” The remainder of my words are swallowed up by the whirling winds as Luna shoves me through the mystical vortex. The dense black thickens around me until it consumes everything.

An instant later, a tiny prick of light appears at a distance, and the winds begin to subside. The light devours the darkness, and I tumble out of the portal and land on black asphalt, the impact jarring my knees. Luna alights beside me as graceful and elegant as ever.
